Day 5-The final day of walking

It rains during the night. We get up early, and eat breakfast. All the hikers have already left to hike. Kevin and I look at the hut journal. Each hut has a journal. Thru-hikers communicate through these journals, keeping track of who has passed them, who has quit, and when each hiker passed by. They can see how far ahead people are that they met earlier on the trail. We took several pictures of pages in the book at this hut.

People who thru-hike choose a trail name or they are given one on the trail by the other hikers. They use this name to sign journals, keep electronic journals, and communicate with people they meet on the trail.

Some hikers will pose riddles, or math problems to challenge the others as they walk. See above.

Hikers also share their sightings of bears along the trail.

Many thu-hikers purchase a rubber stamp to represent their trail name.

Disturbed, Styx, and Furbag were in Bird's Nest #3 with us the night we stayed there. Some hikers will leave their facebook address so you can follow them online.

The picture looks happy, but I seem to recall a lot of yelling about spilled camelbacks on this sleeping platform just before this picture! :)
