Day 9-Jamestowne

Day 9-Today we went to see Jamestown. Out in front was a large creative sculpture of a ship. We are very excited to visit Jamestown because my family are direct descendents of Jamestown and the Mayflower!

This is a recreation of an indian village.

The huts were authentically made. They had people who were dressed as indians. They were scraping hides, weave baskets, and cooking.

This is the entrance to the colonial village. Our ancestor was Stephen Hopkins. We came over on a ship as a clerk. They were ship wrecked in a storm and marooned in Barbadoes. They had to build a new ship and then sail on to Jamestowne. He stayed in Jamestowne for only a short time, and then sailed back to England only to find out that his wife had died while he was gone. He remarried and then loaded the family onto the Mayflower for the trip back to America. While on the ship his new wife gave birth to a baby named Oceanus. It is from this new wife that my family descends. Pretty neat! It is absolutely amazing that this man survived all these trips! The first year most of the population of Jamestowne died off. Only 50 people remained by the following spring. They were starving and they were afraid to leave the fenced area of the fort because the indians. This fort replication is built in correct proportion.

At the pulpit of the church.

The lady is making bread! That room was hot!

This was the armory. The man recruited Kevin for his team and then showed him how to stand watch and fight the indians if attacked.

This is a replica of the Susan Contance, one of the ships that came from England. There were actually several ships that came over because they had to resupply the settlers periodically.

This is the size of the bunk in the ship. It looks large here, but we were all squished on this ship. It was way small for traveling across an ocean.

Later we went to Yorktown along a waterfront area and shopping area. The boys are sporting their new appalachian trail t-shirts. See the white blaze?

Happy, happy, happy! That smile is worth a million bucks!

A picture perfect sunset at the end of a long day!
